FIRST FARM IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NH, AWARDED TOP ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL WELFARE CERTIFICATION FOR PIGS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FIRST FARM IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NH, AWARDED TOP ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL WELFARE CERTIFICATION FOR PIGS
-- Templeton Family Organics uses sustainable agriculture methods to earn Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification for their pasture-raised pigs --

GOFFSTOWN, NH (DECEMBER 5, 2017)--The pigs at Templeton Family Organics are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW). This certification and foodlabel lets consumers know these animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S. and Canada, using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent farm. Templeton Family Organics is the first farming business in Hillsborough County to become Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW for pigs.

Like other Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers across the country, Brian and Christine Templeton recognize the growing consumer interest in how animals are raised on farms. Managing animals outdoors on pasture or range has known benefits for animals, consumers and the environment.

The Templetons, along with four of their six children, own and operate 13-acre Templeton Family Organics, overlooking Goffstown. The farmers believe in pasture-based, sustainable production, which in their experience leads to healthy animals and high-quality pork products. They raise Landrace and Berkshire-cross breeds for their ability to forage on pasture and handle the variable weather conditions. The pigs have continuous access to pasture, with plenty of room to demonstrate natural behaviors like wallowing, grazing and rooting with their snouts, and are regularly moved to fresh ground to minimize the risk of parasites and disease.

The Templetons chose to be Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW because it aligns with their philosophies of raising their animals according to high-welfare standards, and helps communicate their values and practices to their customers.

Christine Templeton of Templeton Family Organics, says:

"People should know that just because a pork product is labeled organic, it doesn't necessarily mean the pig ever saw a blade of grass. Our Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW label shows our customers that we really are farming the way we say we are, raising pigs outdoors on pasture according to the highest welfare standards."
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW Program Director Andrew Gunther says,

"The accountability and integrity offered by Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers like Brian and Christine are unmatched in food production. We're glad to have Templeton Family Organics in the AGW family."
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pork products from Templeton Family Organics are available at their self-service farm stand in Goffstown, as well as at the A Market in Manchester, NH. For more information, visit templetonfamilyorganics.com and find them on Facebook and Instagram. Alternatively, call 781-316-5067 or email templetonfamilyorganics@gmail.com.

Big announcement! We are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved (AWA)!

We had decided that just because we say we are organic doesn't mean that our animals see the light of day, which can and does happen in the organic world (shocking I know!). We decided to take this one step further so you, the consumer, can be assured of the wonderful, happy and humane treatment of our pigs. If you have ever been here, you would have seen the happy pigs frolicking around in the pasture and playing in the mud. One of the biggest thing people say - besides how cute they are, is "I can't believe how friendly they are". So for those of you who haven't been here yet and haven't seen for yourself, you can be assured that our pork lived a very happy and natural life here which, by the way, comes out in the flavor!

Grateful for helping hands

We are very grateful to the Ouellette family who have on several occasions come by with their 6 children to offer a helping hand. In this picture the twins and younger kids moved a group of layer chicks from the main barn to the small hen house so that they can learn how to roost and get used to being in a hen house. While they were busy setting up the house, putting down bedding, setting up feeders, and waters, catching chicks and moving them, the big kids were out moving 175 bigger cornish cross chickens out to the field. When they were done, they came in and cleaned out the pens they were in! Talk about many hands making light work. We were done in record time. Thank you Ouellette family!

Here is another picture of a tremendous helping hand. Below is Wally helping me until the wee hours of the night putting labels on our various chicken cuts, fresh out of the processing plant. Together we labeled, weighed and packaged orders for our customers and put them back into our refrigerated van for delivery in the morning. Thank you Wally - you rock!

Happy Turkeys!

Our turkeys love their portable houses complete with roost. We move them every day onto fresh new grass. Its hard to tell but they are so tall we can stand upright in them giving them flying space too. Naturally now we get a LOT of requests for Thanksgiving turkeys for sale but they are SOLD OUT for 2016. Please get your turkey order in early next year - we will even reserve your turkey now.

Unusual Farm Visit

We had an amazing visit from MEGAFOOD'S CEO, ROBERT CRAVEN.  For Robert's birthday, he decided he wanted to give rather than receive so he and some of his employees came by to support local family farming among other things.  When I saw that help was arriving, (at least that is how I saw it - you know how we are with our visitors by now...) we put him right to work. Since Megafood makes their vitamins from vegetables - farm to tablet, I thought Mr. Craven could plant beets.  He certainly earned his keep that day! There was so much about his visit that was special. Mr. Craven is really about helping people, and giving them access to real nutrition using real nutrients. Its not just about the vitamins though, they wiped out our farm stand - meats, greens, eggs, jellies, syrup, all our products and donated them to a food pantry!

Our organic certification requires detailed documentation and labeling of all our fields. Our fields are named after saints but in honor of all that Mr. Craven does to support the community and farmers we decided to name the new, virgin field that Robert worked on the Robert Craven Field. He is in good company with the saints! Thank you Robert for a beautiful day that will go down in TFO history!

What would we do without little helpers!

No person is too small or inexperienced to give us a helping hands. These little hands planted a couple hundred strawberry plants, dozens of raspberries bushes and more in the last two weeks and mulched them up with our own wood chips from last year's trees - only to reap the benefits next year! Thank you Thomas, DJ, Yaya, Jaz and Jam (driving the tractor) you guys rock!

Getting ready for spring!

While outside things are still getting buttoned up for the winter, inside we are getting ready for next season. We have been making gallons of Apple Cider Vinegar from our own organic apples - and I must say, the best apples ever! We hope to have a long line of gluten free items such as this vinegar.

Wally has been waiting all summer for this moment... he planted, tended, harvested, dried and here he is preparing his long awaited organic popcorn - and boy was it worth the wait!  So very tasty indeed!  He has promised to grow a much bigger field next year as it was well worth all the work. With any luck we will still have some in the spring to sell, that is, if it hasn't been all eaten by then...

PS if anyone would like our organic free range eggs, just ring the doorbell, the girls are still going strong this time of year!

It's a family affair...

All hands on deck - especially on a windy day. We recruited kids, neighbors, nieces and nephews to layout and shovel dirt along the entire edge of the row covers. We could get an attachment for our tractor but then everyone would miss out on the fun!

Now that "the girls" have done their job tilling up the soil , preparing the new strawberry beds were easy. The pigs certainly do the heavy lifting in no time at all!

Meet the Girls...

Introducing Rosary or "Rosie" for short, Starlight, Isabelle and Tulip all affectionately named by our two youngest girls. Rosie and Star are in a "piggy way" and we should have little piglets running around in a couple of weeks.  Isabelle and Tulip are searching for their suitor.
