FIRST FARM IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NH, AWARDED TOP ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL WELFARE CERTIFICATION FOR PIGS

FIRST FARM IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NH, AWARDED TOP ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL WELFARE CERTIFICATION FOR PIGS
-- Templeton Family Organics uses sustainable agriculture methods to earn Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification for their pasture-raised pigs --

GOFFSTOWN, NH (DECEMBER 5, 2017)--The pigs at Templeton Family Organics are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW). This certification and foodlabel lets consumers know these animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S. and Canada, using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent farm. Templeton Family Organics is the first farming business in Hillsborough County to become Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW for pigs.

Like other Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers across the country, Brian and Christine Templeton recognize the growing consumer interest in how animals are raised on farms. Managing animals outdoors on pasture or range has known benefits for animals, consumers and the environment.

The Templetons, along with four of their six children, own and operate 13-acre Templeton Family Organics, overlooking Goffstown. The farmers believe in pasture-based, sustainable production, which in their experience leads to healthy animals and high-quality pork products. They raise Landrace and Berkshire-cross breeds for their ability to forage on pasture and handle the variable weather conditions. The pigs have continuous access to pasture, with plenty of room to demonstrate natural behaviors like wallowing, grazing and rooting with their snouts, and are regularly moved to fresh ground to minimize the risk of parasites and disease.

The Templetons chose to be Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW because it aligns with their philosophies of raising their animals according to high-welfare standards, and helps communicate their values and practices to their customers.

Christine Templeton of Templeton Family Organics, says:

"People should know that just because a pork product is labeled organic, it doesn't necessarily mean the pig ever saw a blade of grass. Our Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW label shows our customers that we really are farming the way we say we are, raising pigs outdoors on pasture according to the highest welfare standards."
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW Program Director Andrew Gunther says,

"The accountability and integrity offered by Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers like Brian and Christine are unmatched in food production. We're glad to have Templeton Family Organics in the AGW family."
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pork products from Templeton Family Organics are available at their self-service farm stand in Goffstown, as well as at the A Market in Manchester, NH. A limited number of chickens for meat will be raised during the growing season. You can read about the quality of our chickens from reviews on Facebook and Yelp. We have decided to lower our price, not because we need to sell but because we are striving to make Organic meat more affordable for everyone.  Whole chickens $5.00/lb. averaging between 3 and 5 pounds will require a deposit of $10.00 each with the remaining due at pick up. Pre packaged chickens $6.00/lb must be purchased in 6 chicken increments and you will receive 6 packages of breasts (2 in each), and 2 packages of thighs, drumsticks, and wings (6 in each). Deposit for pre packaged chickens is $60.00 with the remaining due at pick up. Order now for June delivery.

*Our chickens are certified organic up until butchering. This means that they are pastured outdoors in the natural sunlight and moved daily. They are fed certified organic grain along with what they forage naturally. There are no certified organic butchers in all of New England (if you find one for poultry - let us know).Certified Organic butchering is required to ensure that there is no co-mingling of conventional meat with the organic meat. Since we are unable to secure a certified organic butcher, we use our tried and true butcher who has been putting our birds first on the line to also ensure no co-mingling however we can not call them "certified organic" on the label.

Certified Organic* - Side of pork
1/2 of a pig will yield about 70 pounds of actual cuts. There are other wonderful pieces of pork such as ham hocks or fat that are available in addition to the cuts which is included in the hanging weight. Smoking bacon and hams along with sausage will incur additional charges. The base price without any add-ons is $5.50 lb hanging weight and most sides will be around 100 lbs. An earlier 8 week share is also available for $300 but packages will be lighter.
